University Rave

After another creepy session with my work colleagues during the day, it which they all expected another moral boosting of Tom Joneses Delilah from me (As I sung to myself last week), and generally being a bit over nice to me.

Now before I anyone jumps to conclusions, there is nothing wrong with people genuinely being kind and friendly to one another, and to some degree I do try to act towards other people in a similar manner, despite it not always being easy.

After work it was all about getting ready for going up to the local university for the local Ar ts Festival, which essentially was an end of year piss up for the students that attend the local university.

Naturally not being proper university students, we weren’t supposed to go but nonetheless Zac, myself and his group of friends descended onto the University campus after obtaining our booze from Tesco’s in the city centre.

I wasn’t expecting great things from this rave up at the University, but with the rain drizzling lightly as we slowly wandered onto the field, we were taken aback by the sheer size of the event.

I thought the 3000 people confirmed on the facebook even for this festival was just a load of nonsense when someone mentioned it, but there was thousand’s there and it was an epic site.

It reminded the first time I made it into the reading festival site, there were many similarities! Crappy weather, being one similar factor, and another was the so called “Festival Spirit” being around. Festival Spirit is something pretty hard to define, but I best liken it to a community of revelers, out to have a good time.

After finishing my cider, I headed to main stage where the DJ was playing and it was similar to that of being at the Reading festival in 2007. It was full to the rafters of university students standing there raving to the music.

I was also surprised at some of the music that got played by the DJ songs including

Feeder – Buck Rodgers

Flo Rider ft. T-Pain – Low

Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)

Kayne West – Stronger

Faithless – Insomnia

The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Reef – Place Your Hands On

Jackson 5 – I want you back

Aretha Franklyn - Respect

Queen – Don’t Stop Me Now

The Killers – Mr Brightside

Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody

It was an awesome performance the DJ which saw the crowd goes absolutely wild. From the club classics such as the Low song by Flo Rider ft. T-Pain had everyone just going mad behind me.

Faithless’s Insomnia is such a rave anthem, and the build up was incredible, for the main part of the song, which saw the whole place take off, with the students around me going mad. There was a real energy and vibe amongst the university students. Anyone that was there was sucked up with this whirlwind of liveliness that shook your senses, and made the hairs of the back your neck stand on end. It was that good.

The rock element of Beth Dittos Standing In The Way Of Control was the start of the rock anthems which rule the hearts and minds of the NME magazine indie semesters of today. The crowd were shouting ferociously along and but was nothing to the mad craziness that was to follow. Smells Like Teen Spirit came on and it was a fucking riot starter. Not satisfied by the crowds jumping to the beat of Beth Ditto, we had the song which responsible for the birth of grunge and so to the mosh dancing that goes with it. This was the one song that you can go mad too, and there was heavy swaying and crowd surges for 5 beautifully marathon minutes, which reminded of me why I love music festivals so much.

Nothing could match the energy gained from that song, not even a late encore of The Killers – Mr Brightside was as mad as Nirvana. Queen was the final oomph to the wonderful evening of music, and one more excuse for a drunken sing a long. Bohemian Rhapsody rang out loud and proud from the fields of the University. Perhaps it didn’t matter that Lauren didn’t come to this after all.

Turns out Zac had some female attention, one women grabbing and caressing his arse, but he made the fatal of error of thinking that it was his mate that grabbed his arse and not this girl. He even had a 24 year old Drama student approach him. I too had some female attention, but this time in form of complimenting my Led Zeppelin t –shirt I was wearing. Trouble was when she asked what my favourite song was, in my drunken state of mind I couldn’t think of any and proceeded to call me a “Fake” and a “Phony” and not deemed “Fit enough to wear the t-shirt”

It was one fucking epic evening though.
